Service NSW, a government agency in New South Wales, sought to transition its design system from a shared Word document to a more collaborative platform.
SharePoint and Confluence were initially considered but not chosen. Instead, the website team developed a proof-of-concept using Drupal CMS, aiming for a shared contribution model.
The project involved workshops to map content, understand user needs, and improve information architecture. Insights revealed a desire for greater collaboration, findability, and features like version control.
Pre-MVP testing involved interviews and usability testing with diverse teams. The outcome was the launch of the Service NSW design system, named GEL (Global Experience Language), on Drupal CMS.
Through extensive collaboration, the system became accessible and user-friendly, catering to various roles within Service NSW. While currently restricted to internal users, there's a potential for future public access.
